Y-Cloud VMs

Y-Cloud is a BYU-hosted cloud-computing solution. It allows departments to create VMs, generally for use as servers. It is powered by VMware vSphere. Each department is allocated a certain amount of computing resources, which the department can then allocate to VMs as needed. Our current department allocation is as follows.

  • 21 GHz computational power
  • 92 GB memory (RAM)
  • 7.5 TB storage (across two datastores)

Y-Cloud can be accessed on any major browser from byuvc.byu.edu. There are two web clients to choose from. The Flash-based client has full functionality. The HTML5 client does not, though it has always had every function I have needed. The login page to these clients will be on nucleus.byu.edu, but we have been asked not to bookmark that page, as the URI can expire.

Below is a list of the Virtual Machines that are in Y-Cloud. Full DNS names for these servers are hostname.byu.edu.

*The VM eceprod is unique in the sense that CAEDM owns the ee.byu.edu and ece.byu.edu domains, which are also valid URLs for our department website. Because of this we have an entry in the MAD that points to the IP address for eceprod. CAEDM also had to setup an A record in their DNS so that DNS will work correctly.

Each VM must have a static IP address set. To set that you will use QIP. QIP only shows the set of private and public IP addresses that have been allocated to our department. In 2018, we were assigned new IP ranges and were asked to move our machines to the new ranges. This has been completed, though the old ranges are still accessible in QIP as of January 2019. The new and old IP ranges are below

Private/Public Old Range New Range
Private 10.18.32.0/22 10.18.46.128/26
Public 128.187.104.0/23 128.187.107.64/27

For reference, the number after the slash refers to the range's subnet mask. For example, /22 corresponds to 255.255.252.0.
