This is an old revision of the document!

Not sure this policy is still being enforced

The department will allow student laptops to access the Local Area Network only if the laptop is being used to do research. Local Area Network access will not be allowed for personal or class use. The student can use the wireless network for that. Access will be granted on a per case basis (please submit the request to the full time CSR).

If the laptop is granted access the following will apply (this list will be explained to the students)

  • A date will be set as to when access to the Local Area Network will expire. Usually one year from the time of the request. This can be renewed each year until the student no longer needs access.
  • The students laptop must have an updated anti-virus product installed. The full-time and student CSR’s will verify that it is installed.
  • The students laptop will only have access from the location requested with the exception of open access areas like in the CAEDM lab. If the student is found unplugging other computer connections and using them access will be revoked.
  • If the student is caught hacking or the machine is infected with a virus its access will be revoked. If they are caught hacking their CAEDM account will be disabled and they will be reported to the honor code office.
  • The student requesting access gives the full-time and student CSR’s the right to access the machine should there be any problem.

If for some reason in the future we have a major problem because of allowing personal machines on the network all personal machine access will be revoked.

Any future changes to this policy will be updated in this wiki article.

Below are the following reasons why we don't allow Local Area Connection access for personal or class use.

  • Adding student machines to the network can compromise the network if the machine does not have all its updates or virus protection.
  • It is very hard to manage student machines on the network since we don't really know how long they need a connection to the network and we don't have a system to automatically terminate their connection after a given period of time.
  • In CB425 CAEDM provides laptop stations for students to sit at. These stations have an Ethernet cable, monitor, keyboard and mouse. We hope to have some of these in the near future.

If students report problems with wireless connectivity we will work with OIT to resolve the issue. We need to make sure that we provide sufficient wireless connectivity if we are not going to allow students to access the wired network.
